India's soybean production is forecasted to be above 90 lakh tons during this season despite 4% shortfall in the total acreage, said industrial body, the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA).

However, the forecasted yield is 7 lakh tons lower than what the country harvested in the previous year. Last year, the total production was 97.25 lakh tons. During this kharif season, the total sown area came down to 93 lakh hectares from last year's 97 lakh hectares.

Crop condition is seen pretty well so far in the major producing states and the country could yield above 90 lakh tons if the trend goes well, said SOPA.

However, the exact estimate of total production will be done after some time, it said.

Out of the country's total soybean oilseeds production, Madhya Pradesh accounts for 60 % and the crop received a major boost in August due to active monsoon in the region.
