U.S. stocks advanced on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 rising nearly 1 percent as a jump in crude oil prices pushed energy shares higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 117.31 points, or 0.98 percent, to 12,138.70. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 12.47 points, or 1.01 percent, to 1,248.94. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> climbed 24.19 points, or 0.93 percent, to 2,636.45.
