JJ (Micah Fowler) gets a new aide in Season 1, episode 2 of “Speechless,” but his mom Maya (Minnie Driver) isn’t a fan of his new “voice.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, aptly titled as “N-E-NEW A-I-AIDE,” next week’s installment finds Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) starting his work as JJ’s new full-time aide. However, given Maya’s apparent dislike towards Kenneth, the Dimeo’s matriarch is just waiting for a reason to fire him.

So when JJ avoids attending a physical therapy appointment, Maya automatically blames Kenneth for it and ultimately fires him. But will Maya undo her decision when she realizes how much JJ likes Kenneth as his aide?

In the season premiere, JJ and Kenneth instantly clicked right after having a little chat during the school fair. When Kenneth approached JJ for the first time, the latter was so amazed by the former’s personality that he immediately offered him a job to be his new aide.

Kenneth tried out if he could do the job, and JJ was obviously thrilled that Kenneth didn’t sound like a fairy god mother just like his former aide. Not only Kenneth did well in translating the things JJ wanted to say, he, too, had the skill to make JJ’s thoughts sound hipper and more casual.

Elsewhere in the episode, Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) has a hard time teaching Dylan (Kyla Kenedy) “the family way to not be so neighborly.” While it’s unclear why exactly Jimmy wants Dylan to be not so neighborly, it probably have something to do with the DiMeo’s penchant to moving from one place to another. Perhaps, Jimmy wants Dylan to be not so friendly to people in the neighborhood, so she won’t have any emotional attachment to anyone in the event they move again to another place.

“Speechless” Season 1, episode 2 airs on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
