JJ DiMeo (Micah Fowler) might lose the approval of some of his schoolmates in next week’s Season 1, episode 3 of “Speechless.”

The synopsis for the episode, titled “B-O-N–BONFIRE,” reveals that Lafayette High School’s homecoming bonfire isn’t moving forward due to Maya DiMeo’s (Minnie Driver) concerns about the location of the annual gathering.

Worried that the beach location of the bonfire is not wheelchair accessible, Maya forces the cancellation of the event. While Maya thinks her decision ultimately favors her son’s welfare, her opposition to the bonfire only hurts JJ’s relationships with some of his new friends in school.

After finding out that his mom is the one behind the bonfire cancellation, some of JJ’s schoolmates start speaking out against him. As seen in the preview clip for the upcoming episode, JJ — together with his new aide Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) — arrives home from school looking particularly sad. This scene probably happens right after his fellow students have expressed their disappointment over Maya’s selfish reason to cancel the bonfire.

Maya, however, later realizes that she’s wrong about forcing the cancellation of the event. So in order to help JJ earn back the approval of his schoolmates, the mother and son duo decides to stage a fake prank.

While it’s unclear what the fake prank is and whether they will be able to pull it off, the promo video also reveals that Maya makes a new communication board for JJ to help him make new friends. The new phrases and words added to his board include, “What’s up,” “Hey girl” and “Kanye.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Jimmy DiMeon (John Ross Bowie) helps his son Ray DiMeo (Mason Cook) settle into their new home.

“Speechless” Season 1, episode 3 airs on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. Check out the preview clip for the episode below!
