Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations finals yesterday at the soccer city stadium Johanesburg South Afrca ;Sunday Mba scored the only goal that retuned the Trophy after 19 years of waiting. Nigeria defeated surprise finalist Burkina Faso in a highly intense encounter. Both teams began the game cautiously at the early stages, The Nigeria were quite unsettled in the first few minutes but gradual got into the rhythm and showed more desire than their opponents. The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost quite a number of created chances, while Burkina Faso led by their star player Jonathan Pitriopa showed flashes of brilliance but hardly troubled the Nigerian goal keeper. The deadlock was broken when Victor Moses rebound found Sunday Mba who lifted the ball above the Burkina Faso defender, before powering the ball into the far corner, Sunday Mba had scored a week earlier against the Ivorian in the quarter finals. The Nigerian team created a lot of begging chances that could have killed the game off but could not convert them. The Nigerian Manager Stephen Keshi became the second person in the African Cup of Nations history to win it as captain in 1994 and now as a coach. The coach has been under some intense pressure due to the lacklustre performance in the preliminary rounds. He has proved most soccer plaudits wrong, Not too many believed in the team that had 17 player debuting the competition .The team would be welcomed in Abuja, the seat of Government in Nigeria by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday 12th February 2013.
