American Golfers Now Outrank American Tennis Players

As the LPGA Tour finished its season with the CME Group Titleholder Tournament this week-nd at the Twins Eagles Club in Naples, FL with 27 other top Americans making the cut for the final rounds, it seems that American Golf has surpassed American Tennis in numbers among the professional ranks. Each tour except the ATP for men's tennis has an American in the top three of world rankings. Golf not only has top players but several players in the top 100 unlike tennis.

Top American Stacy Lewis, at 27 is the LPGA's #2 ranked player and "Player of the Year," and finished the tournament tied for 29th followed by seven other American women ranked in the top fifty in the world.  Although, Na Yeon Choi took the title with second going to So Yeon Ryu, also "Rookie of the Year," Brittany Lincicome another American finished third.

There are sixteen female golfers in the top 100 of the world rankings.  On the men's side the PGA Tour is led by Tiger Woods at #2 followed by twenty more players in the top fifty, and eleven more in the top 100.

Serena Williams is America's top female tennis player and #3 WTA ranked player in the world followed by only four other women in the top fifty. There are five more players in the top 100 for women's tennis. John Isner is the highest ranked male at #14. He is followed by three more Americans in the top fifty plus three more in the top 100 for a total of only seven.

Lewis comes behind Yani Tseng of Taiwan, by a small margin, ending an eighteen year drought for Americans since Beth Daniels in 1994 to earn the women's professional tour "Player of the Year Award." After passing Christie Kerr mid-season to become the #1 ranked American player, Lewis finished with four wins this year and 16 top ten finishes to help earn her award.

American golf is in good shape. Numbers playing the sport and competing on the satellite and major tours will produce #1 players and winners of major tournaments. American Tennis needs more numbers and winners because the Williams Sisters (Serena and Venus) are finishing their careers and Andy Roddick has retired.
