According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United's want-away forward Wayne Rooney would prefer a move to Chelsea and The Blues are very much favourites to land the England International.

There is much speculation surrounding Arsenal's pursuit of the 27-year-old from the British press on Friday, but it is thought that the player would rather a move to Chelsea. Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger is on the brink of sealing a deal for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and wants to bring in Rooney as well to increase his striking options.

Meanwhile, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is looking to spend big on Edinson Cavani from Napoli, who is looking set on making a £49 million move after the Confederations cup, with both Chelsea and Real Madrid being touted as his possible destinations. Rooney had been seen as another option for Chelsea, who are actively seeking a striker to lead there line this season after they struggled in that position last year.

Rooney had earlier handed in a transfer request at United, although the club are keen to keep hold of their prize asset. New Manager David Moyes has made it clear that he has no intentions of selling to England man. Having said that, United themselves are trying to make a number of signings to improve areas of their squad this season and the money that could potentially come in from the sale of Rooney, will certainly tempt them to sell up, especially as the player wants to leave.

Rooney has been at United since 2004 when he signed from Everton for a fee of £25 million and has clocked up almost 150 goals for the reigning Premier League champions.
