Arsenal: Possible Premier League Contenders?

Arsene Wenger has made two outstanding purchases this summer so far. Firstly, acquiring Lukas Podolski from Koln was a coup afer Koln was relegated from the German Bundesliga last season. His second signing was the Ligue 1 Golden Boot winner and Montpellier front man Oliver Giroud. Those were two astute signings by Wenger and two players that have an eye for goal.

But does this mean Arsenal can contest for the Premier League title next season?

To really challenge for the title, a team must have four top quality front men. The signings of Giroud and Podolski give Arsenal an attacking force to rival Manchester City. They accompany last season's top scorer Robin van Persie, Gervinho and Theo Walcott can play through the middle. This is before one even mentions the forwards that will return to the Emirates after loan spells. (Bendtner, Vela and Arshavin) Plus the likes of Park and Chamakh sat on the bench for most of last season. Arsenal now has an attacking force that any team in the Premier League would want.

However this attack will be dampened if van Persie decides to look for pastures new. The Arsenal skipper has been linked with move to Manchester and Italy over the past few months. One can't help but think if van Persie wants to win titles, he will have to leave. On the other hand, if van Persie stays, they have a very good chance of contesting every trophy in England. There have been reports stating that he will stay at the Emirates but Wenger has attacked Serie A too. Why would he disgrace another league if they weren't trying to lure him away?

Injuries were a big problem for Arsenal last season. They received the third highest amount after Manchester United and Tottenham. Their main area for injuries came in the defence. Sometimes they had to play Song as a central defender because the injuries were so bad. This calls for Wenger to purchase one more defender. Whether it is a centre back or a full back, he'll need to purchase one. If they can stiffen the defence up, they'll have a solid structure and stop leaking goals. This will accompany their front line and Arsenal will be a force in English football again.

Building on a third place finish isn't easy but with the signings of Giroud and Podolski, it will give them an edge. They will also need to keep van Persie and not let him go the way of Fabregas or Nasri. I think a top four finish is certain and breaking up the Manchester clubs will be possible.
