Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Gunners Agreeing A Deal For Gonzalo Higuain

The latest transfer rumor involving Arsenal has them close to agreeing a deal for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. A report in the Spanish publication Sport.es claims Arsenal could sign the Argentina international for around €22 million.

That would be something of a coup given Higuain's incredible talent. He has developed into a deadly finisher during his time with Los Blancos.

The ex-River Plate star has gone from an attacking midfielder, to a wide player, to a true central striker. In Madrid's UEFA Champions League Last 16 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Higuain gave Robin van Persie an object lesson in how to lead an attack in a big game.

His killer instinct in front of goal is complemented by excellent off the ball movement and deceptive strength. Higuain makes clever runs to latch onto through passes and also knows how to use his body to fend off a marker.

Arsenal certainly need a prolific striker. Both Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski have struggled to establish themselves as leaders of Arsenal's forward line this season.

In particular, both have failed to score in the biggest games against the top teams of the English Premier League. Manager Arsene Wenger needs to improve quality in attacking areas if Arsenal hope to mount a credible challenge for next season's title.

They have been strongly linked with a move for Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic. However, a recent report in The Daily Express suggested interest from Italian champions Juventus could convince Jovetic to remain in Serie A.

Conversely, Higuain might not be as keen to stay in his current league. He has not been a regular in Madrid boss Jose Mourinho's plans.

He has shared time with Karim Benzema and like many of the Madrid team he's acted as a foil for Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Higuain has proved he possesses the qualities to be the focal point for an attack.

He could be the free-scoring centre-forward Wenger needs to improve the firepower of his squad.
