Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Bayern Munich ace David Alaba. Reports from Austrian website, suggest the Gunners are targeting a deal for the talented 20-year-old.

That would be something of a coup for Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger. A versatile athlete and proven winner like Alaba could help the Gunners in a number of ways.

The report indicates Wenger will tempt Alaba by promising him a role in central midfield. That is Alaba's natural position, despite his success at left-back for Bayern this season.

Alaba would be a major boost to Arsenal's options in the middle. Quick and powerful, he offers a greater element of physicality than incumbents Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey.

As well as his mettle as a tough tackler, Alaba is also skilled and assured in possession. The Austria international is a creative and accurate passer.

He is also hard working enough to make himself a factor at both ends of the pitch. At just 20, Alaba is a rising, youthful talent. He is the kind of precocious youngster Wenger could quickly mold into a marquee performer.

Despite his positive attributes, there are reasons to be sceptical about this rumor. One of the main reasons is that Alaba is currently contracted to Bayern for two more seasons.

It is also not yet known how incoming new manager Josep Guardiola might view Alaba. Although it seems unlikely that Guardiola will move him into central midfield.

Munich have a plethora of quality players in the middle. Bastian Schweinsteisger, Toni Kroos, Javi Martinez and Luis Gustavo are all ahead of Alaba at those positions.

The arrival of newly signed Mario Goetze also makes Alaba's desire to play in midfield a long shot if he remains in Munich. That would not be an issue at Arsenal and Alaba would still get to enjoy UEFA Champions League football.

Having just won a treble with Bayern, Alaba already boasts trophy winning experience that most of this Arsenal squad do not have. Wenger got to glimpse Alaba's talents close up, during Munich's away goals victory over Arsenal in the Champions League Last-16.

Signing the tough and versatile proven winner would represent excellent business during a critical summer for Arsenal.
