Arsenal will make a move to sign young Juventus midfield ace Paul Pogba, according to The Daily Mirror. Landing the talented prospect would be a major coup for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Pogba is a quality player and would bring vital attributes currently missing from Arsenal's midfield ranks. He is exactly the kind of powerful runner Wenger needs to make his brand of free-flowing football work.

Wenger needs a buccaneering midfielder who can break from deep and lead quick counters. That player is the focal point of Arsenal's transition between defence and attack.

At the start of the season, Wenger chose to rely on Abou Diaby in this role. Strong performances away to Liverpool and Manchester City, showed how valuable a strong, quick-breaking midfielder is to Arsenal.

However, the tragically unlucky Diaby soon succumbed to yet another injury. Arsenal's midfield balance was destroyed and Wenger was forced to settle on a new formula.

Rather than utilize a transitioning midfielder, he eventually opted for two deep-lying players. The Frenchman partnered Mikel Arteta with Aaron Ramsey in front of the back four.

The move made Arsenal more defensively solid. However, it also blunted their attacking thrust and slowed down the flow of passing and movement.

To improve Arsenal's forward play ahead of the new season, Wenger needs to find a powerful runner. Pogba fits the mold perfectly, having once been dubbed the "next Patrick Vieira."

It is an apt comparison. Pogba displays the same rugged style and long-striding drive that made Vieira the linchpin of Wenger's best squads.

Wenger even attempted to sign Pogba from Le Havre but was beaten to the teenager's signature by Manchester United. Criminally underused by Sir Alex Ferguson, Pogba was available on a free transfer last summer.

Again Wenger was beaten to the punch. This time it was Turin giants Juventus who won the transfer race for Pogba's services.

Even in arguably the most talented midfield rotation in the world, Pogba managed to prove his worth. He delivered a series of technically sound and commanding performances for The Old Lady.

Pogba displayed his sheer power in the middle of the park and also showcased an eye for goal. He netted five times in Juve's title-winning campaign.

However, not everything went well for Pogba in Serie A and that is encouraging Wenger to prepare a fresh bid. According to The Mirror, Pogba has soured on life in Italy, after being the victim of racial abuse.

He also didn't endear himself to Juve's hierarchy when he received a red card for spitting in the season's final game. Wenger may feel the time is ripe to bring Pogba back to the English Premier League.

He could offer him more first-team opportunities than Pogba will receive in Turin. It will be difficult to supplant any one of Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal.

More than acquiring a defensive midfielder, Wenger needs a more dynamic, driving player to link defence and attack. Pogba is easily the best choice and worth his £15 million price tag.

At just 20, Pogba is young enough to develop and refine his game under Wenger's tutelage. The Arsenal manager would finally have the right skilled and combative fulcrum at the heart of his squad.
