Arsenal v Southampton

Cries of joy rang out across the Emirates yesterday as the Arsenal side strolled comfortably to a 6-1 victory over the Southampton Saints. Following an 11th minute own goal from Hooiveld (largely assisted by Gibbs) the goals just kept on flowing from the nearly faultless home side.

It looked as if the left back (Gibbs) was going for "a hatrick of own goals" causing 2 Saints' players to put the ball in the back of their own net.

The first half performance was incredible, with both Podolski and Gervinho getting on the score sheet - along with the two own goals - to make it 4-0, but in the 45th minute, a fumbled catch by Arsenal number 1 Szczesny allowed Fox to hit back at the Gunners, reducing the lead to just 3 goals.

As is always, the second half was less magnificent than the first, although still enthralling. Gervinho and Walcott fired two more home in the last 45, leaving the Saints well and truly beaten by a 5-goal deficit.

New signing Cazorla really shone in this episode (yet again!), and he has left everyone quite simply shocked, at his ability to mould in with his new team so fast, you would be forgiven for thinking he has been with Arsenal for years.

The stats tell the story of how one-sided this game really was, with the Gunners having 70% of possession, and triple the shots on target. Saturday's game left Arsenal 3rd in the Premier League, and going into Tuesday's Champions League game on a high. While Southampton are still looking to acquire their first top-flight win this season.
