According to The People, Aston Villa are looking to target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this January as Paul Lambert attempts to perfect his forward line.
Per the source:
"Aston Villa are already looking at replacements for Darren Bent – and are ready to chase Saint-Etienne striker Pierre Aubameyang. Boss Paul Lambert has frozen Bent out of the first-team picture at Villa Park and looks certain to flog him in January, with Fulham interested."
The story of Bent is a confusing one, but his absence from the squad that beat Sunderland on Saturday did nothing to dispel the rumours he will be packing his bags in January.
While he may be a poacher extraordinaire, Villa simply don't have the creative players to make use of his services - Christian Benteke represents a much easier target when moving the ball forward quickly.
Bent's lack of work rate has been criticised and it is generally believed he is good for only one thing - scoring goals. Aubameyang has a wonderful poacher's instinct having finally settled into a striking role with Saint-Etienne, but offers a better all-round game too.
His performances for Gabon in the last African Cup of Nations were nothing short of superb, and for many he was the Player of the Tournament. His link-up play was fantastic and there's genuine reason to believe he could form a formidable partnership with Benteke for Aston Villa.
