Biggest Surprises of Champions League Play

Chelsea loses to Shakhtar:

Shakhter Donetsk managed to pull off an upset by beating current Champions League holders Chelsea. The Ukrainian side took a two goal lead with goals from Texiera and Fernandinho.

Chelsea managed to pull a goal back through Brazilian Oscar but couldn't turn the game around falling to a 2-1 defeat at the Donbass Arena. 

The Blues' were simply outplayed by their opponents who had more shots, more possesion and overall more goals than the Premier League side.

Michael Carrick plays at the back

Midfield man Michael Carrick started for Manchester United against Braga, which isn't a big surprise, the surprise was that he started at centre-back.

Rio Ferdinand - United's usual defender was placed on the bench following a row with manager Sir Alex Ferguson over the 'Kick it Out' racism campaign.

The move to play Carrick appeared to be back-firing with Braga taking a 2-0 lead in the first half but United turned the game around with two goals from Hernandez and one from Johnny Evans.

Juventus draw in Denmark.

Nordsjaelland managed to get their first Champions League point with a surprising 1-1 draw against two-time former European Champions Juventus.

The Old Lady of Italian football are unbeaten in all competitions this year - but have drawn three Champions League games on the bounce.

The Danish champions have managed to hold the Italian Champions in one of the most surprising results of this round of the competition.
