Borussia-Park is the setting on Sunday of what promises to be an enthralling match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund.
Gladbach have just one point from their last three Bundesliga encounters, whilst free scoring Dortmund have found the net fifteen times in their five Bundesliga matches since the turn of the year. The black and yellows have won four of those matches, with their only slip up at home to Hamburg.
Last week Marco Reus was the hat-trick hero for Dortmund as they clinically dismantled Eintracht Frankfurt, whilst Gladbach went down 1-0 to Rafael van der Vaart’s sublime strike in Hamburg.
The Foals have also had to contend with their Europa League travels this week. They lost 2-0 to Lazio in Rome (5-3 on aggregate) plunging out of Europe for this season. Tiresome and fatigue could well play its part in the latter stages of the match. This could be dangerous against the high tempo, high pressing game Dortmund love to play at.
Earlier in the week, Sky Italia reported that Bayern Munich are making an ambitious move for Borussia Dortmund’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.
On the face of it, this report was easy to dismiss. However, Sky Italia are the same publication who broke the story of Pep Guardiola making his big move to Bavaria, so many Bayern fans took notice.
But the story didn’t stop with Sky Italia. It didn’t take long for German publication Spiegel too pick up on the story and report that Bayern and Lewandowski had agreed to personal terms, and now it was up to Dortmund and Bayern to reach a financial agreement. They went on to say that Lewandowski was excited at the potential of playing under new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola.
Regardless of the truth of the rumors, would pursuing Lewandowski actually be a good move for Die Bayern? There’s no question that Lewandowski is a striker of great talent and even greater potential, but is it worth Bayern returning to their FC Hollywood ways?
Bayern Munich welcome Schalke 04 to the Allianz-Arena on Saturday, with the two sides in contrasting forms.
Bayern are currently unbeaten in eleven Bundesliga matches, whereas Schalke have only won once in nine. That form is why Bayern are a staggering 22 points clear of the Gelsenkirchen side.
The impressive form of Bayern this season has seen them pull away at the top of the Bundesliga, they currently have a 12 point gap to second place Borussia Dortmund.
One reason for their superiority this season has been the influence of Mario Mandžukić and Thomas Müller. The two have a combined total of 25 goals and nine assists. Their partnership has been ruthless in attack as Bayern have amassed a total of 51 goals in just twenty Bundesliga matches. They have only conceded seven.
Dante has played a huge role in that defence. The Brazilian won his first cap for the Seleção in midweek against England, just reward for an outstanding season so far with the Bavarian giants.
