Chelsea Maintain Pressure on Arsenal and Tottenham, Beat Wigan Athletic 2-1

Roberto Di Matteo made seven changes to his squad to play Wigan Athletic.

David Luiz played his 50th match for Chelsea while the likes of Lampard, Torres and Terry were out of the starting line up. With a very hectic schedule ahead having to play six matches in 18 days, Chelsea had to win the game to keep their hopes alive for their Champions League qualification spot, on the other hand Wigan desperately needed at least a point to keep themselves out of the relegation zone.

Chelsea did not look very convincing right from the word go but showed shades of their old selves through shots on target by Cahill, Juan Mata and Didier Drogba. Wigan played out of their shells to show why they deserve to still play in the elite league and having dominated the first half it looked very rare that Chelsea would go ahead and win the game in the second half.

The second half was convincing at Stamford bridge, the fans support for Torres grew as they chanted his name through the period he was on the field.

Goals in the second half came from Ivanovic in the 61st who was on a clear off side position but the referee's flag stayed down, Wigan were almost on terms to equalize with Chelsea seconds later through Di Santo but the ball did not find the net, after a smooth first half for Wigan they were bound to score sooner or later as Mohamed Diame scored for them in the 81st minute, however Chelsea's fortunes ran deep into injury time as Juan Mata scored through a deflection of a volley off the goal post from Fernando Torres  in the 92nd minute to seal the Game. Helping Chelsea win 2-1

All of this means that Chelsea are now just two points behind Tottenham in the battle for the fourth position and they are well in the run.
