Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Look Set To Sign Highly Rated Left Back Luke Shaw From Southampton

According to Goal.com, Chelsea are on the brink of signing one of the best rated young players in the country, in the shape of Southampton youth product Luke Shaw.

The Blues have been monitoring the 17-year-old left back for sometime now and are ready to make their move sooner rather than later, with Ashley Cole looking ever more likely to leave the Bridge at the end of the season, when his current contract runs out.

Southampton have one of the best youth academies in the country and have been responsible for producing players such as Arsenal pair Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, along with Tottenham's world class winger Gareth Bale. Shaw is the latest product to be touted as a future world star.

Shaw has enjoyed regular appearances in The Saints back four this season at the tender age of 17 and has looked more than comfortable making the step up, even gaining a man of the match performance.

Goal.com have compared Shaw to Gareth Bale, with his pace, confidence, ability to run with the ball and his sheer energry and commitment. Shaw would also have the ability to play further forward, just like Bale.

Chelsea already have Ryan Bertrand who has been solid when asked to replace Ashley Cole and also offers good versatility. But at his young age, it seems like Shaw is all set to develop into the top class player that Chelsea would need to replace Cole and could well over take Bertrand if his development continues this way.

If the move can materialise as Chelsea want it to, it is pretty certain that a loan move back to St Mary's will be the case, as they did with Kevin De Bruyne. A move that seems to be working with De Bruyne's development, could also work with Shaw.

Chelsea should be able to land the young starlet for around £5 million and it would seem a top investment would be made by the European Champions here, especially if they are set to lose Cole.
