Blues owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light for manager Roberto Di Matteo to pursue a move for Real Madrid's versatile defender, Sergio Ramos, according to The Daily Mail.
26-year-old Ramos has been involved in recent bust-ups with members of the Madrid coaching staff, including with current manager Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager had even left Ramos on the bench in their recent Champions League match against Manchester City.
The Spanish international has the abilty to play as a right back, or as a centre back and is very much admired by Abramovich. Chelsea had looked at bringing in a couple of defender's over the summer with Marseille's Loic Remy being a target along with new Cesar Azpilicueta, who did sign.
Ramos would be an ideal acquisition by the European Champions who have struggled to keep a tight defence so far this season, recently throwing away a 2-0 lead against Juventus, which frustrated Abramovich.
It is not the first time that their has been an unhappy star player at Madrid this season, Cristiano Ronaldo has already expressed his sadness at the club after his apparent fall out with a member of the backroom staff. Mourinho will be keen to keep hold of both players, although his no nonsense attitude will have no place for any player who does not want to play for the club.
There will be a number of other clubs alerted by the current rift between Mourinho and Ramos, but it is Chelsea who lead the way and are ready to fight off the likes of Manchester City, Zenit and Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Capital One Trophy on Tuesday evening at Stamford Bridge and Di Matteo is ready to play some of the fringe players mixed in with some youngsters as they chase another trophy.
