According to reports via mercato365, a Chelsea scouting team have recently watched a French Ligue 1 match between Montpellier and Marseille. The reason being was to scout Montpellier's club captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Speculation has since been growing as to whether Chelsea are looking to make a move for the defender before the transfer window closes on Saturday.
Having recently signed full back Cesar Azpilicueta from Marseille, Chelsea officials are not shy of scouting in the French league and have watched many great talents there, including new star man Eden Hazard.
23-year-old Yanga-Mbiwa is naturally a central defender, but he is hugely versatile and can play anywhere across the back line, or as a holding midfielder.
Chelsea are expected to bring in one new face before Saturday, but reports suggest this would be Porto's attacker Givanildo Hulk. With the transfer window deadline day always throwing up surprises, nothing can be certain at this stage.
Yanga-Mbiwa has made just one appearance for the senior French squad but has featured 8 times at Under-21 level. He's been at Montpellier his whole senior career and began playing there in 2007. He has since been honoured with the club captaincy and any move away from the squad, would be a tough decision for him. He is only ten appearances short of 200 games for the Ligue 1 side.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has already stated his ambition once again by spending big on the London club. The European Champions aim is to remain the amongst the best teams in Europe and have a deep squad that is set to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona as Europe's finest.
