Various media sources are suggesting that Atletico Madrid striker, Radamel Falcao, has hinted to team mates that he might well have chosen their close neighbours Real Madrid as his next destination in the summer, turning down a move to European Champions Chelsea.
The speculation comes close to reports that the Colombian international had been in discussions with Chelsea officials on Monday and over the weekend, suggesting that the player and club could not agree on preliminary terms.
The 26-year-old prolific striker has been on Chelsea's radar for some time now and it has been suggested on a number of occasions that he will become a Chelsea player in January, the latest reports would say otherwise as the transfer window draws nearer.
However, Chelsea officials have been quick to seek alternatives and have been in discussions with Real Madrid about taking their highly rated 25-year-old forward, Gonzalo Higuain, to Stamford Bridge during the January transfer wondow, as reported by The Daily Mail, amongst other sources.
Falcao would cost around £48 million, whilst Higuain would be slightly less if Madrid would be prepared to negotiate. If Falcao does chose the La Liga club, it is thought that they will need to reduce their wage bill to accommodate him, thus possibly allowing Higuain to leave.
It is no secret that the Chelsea are seeking a new striker, possibly even two of them during the transfer window, which opens in January. Playing with only one recognised striker since the beginning of the season in the shape of off form Fernando Torres was always a risk, one that perhaps Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is now fully regretting with The Blues struggling to maintain a title challenge and being dumped out of the Champions League in mid-week.
Higuain could be seen as a better option that Falcao for some Chelsea supporters, being almost two years younger and slightly cheaper. Falcao has an excellent scoring record and is a good all round striker, but Higuain also has a decent eye for goal scoring 26 goals last season and is on 8 already this season.
