Europe Rallies From 4-10 To Win Ryder Cup

Europe won the 2012 Ryder Cup but not without pulling out all the stops with great team play and spirit. Starting Sunday, the US led the European team by 10-6. Down by two more at one point on Sat., the Europeans made an incredible come back winning four key initial matches and four final matches on holes 17 and 18 on Sunday. Team USA had to get 4 and 1/2 more points to win the Ryder Cup, and Team Europe only needed 4 points as holder of the Cup for the final 12 singles matches.  It was a see-saw match with Team USA again on the losing end as Europe retained the Ryder Cup.

Rory McIlroy arrived 10 minutes before his tee time, but still managed to win his point. Nicolas Colsarts four putted on #10 giving Dustin Johnson 1 Up.  D. Johnson got the first Sunday points for the USA to make it 11-10. Then Justin Rose made a long birdie putt to go all square with Phil Mickelson, then followed with a birdie on #18 as Mickelson's approach rolled off the green for 11 all.

Zachary Johnson finished 2-up on Graeme McDowell to put the US up 12-11.  Minutes later Tiger Woods went up on Francesco Molinari by 1. Then Jim Furyk who is no. 2 in bunker saves came out of the bunker on hole-17 well past the hole by several feet setting up his miss for his match to go all square (AS).

It became 12 all when Lee Westwood beat Matt Kuchar, 3 and 2. Next Sergio Garcia just missed a long putt to put the Europeans one point away from a win giving Furyk a chance to halve the hole which he missed. Europe went up 13-12 with 3 matches to go.

Unfortunately, it seemed like it was meant to be as two of the last three Americans were 0-9 for the week. Steve Stricker birdied to go AS. Then Tiger who has had trouble with hole 16, ripped a shot down the middle to go up. Then Jason Dufner came up with a win to make it 13-13. And the US fate rested on their two players who had gone winless.

On 17, Martin Kaymer  went up one on Stricker, and Woods stayed AS in his match. So Europe needed only to halve both matches for a win. Tiger had not made a birdie on the back nine which he had lit up prior to today. Then on 17 after Molinari was off the green, Woods hit the green of the par three for a birdie putt. Stricker had a must win on hole #18 to halve his match for the US to stay in the match.

The tension mounted, even Tiger took a deep breadth before his putt which he missed as did his opponent to stay up by one. It was all on Stricker with a multi-level putt to save the match for the Americans. It was all for naught giving Kaymer two chances to win the Ryder Cup which he did on his second try capping off a historic comeback in the Ryder Cup for the Europeans. Sadly Stricker finished with no wins and Tiger had a tie for a final team score of 13 1/2 to 14 1/2.  There was not enough by them, or the whole team who too faltered on Sun., to bring the Ryder Cup back to America. So, two years from now Team USA will try again to wrestle the trophy back from the Europeans.
