Manchester City are determined not to make the same mistake as last season, when they signed a number of B-Listers rather than a top target like Van Persie. That philosophy cost them their title to their fierce local rivals, Manchester United. Already this transfer window, they have secured the services of Jesus Navas and Fernandinho at a total cost of around £60m, now they are looking at adding another winger in the shape of Real Madrid`s Angel Di Maria.
Di Maria has been an influential player for Real since his move in 2010 when he signed a five year deal. Pellegrini is an advocate of wingers so he sees Di Maria as the perfect foil for Navas on the other wing. However, Real president, Florentino Perez is unlikely to want to sell and will demand a high price for any attempted transfer, possibly by demanding a fee as high as £35m. This is seen as a way of deflecting any suitors for his best players.
If City are unable to persuade Real to part with Di Maria, then Pellegrini can always revert to a player who has already made it clear that he wants to join City; that player being Isco, who is currently at Malaga, which is incidentally, Pellegrini`s old club! When asked about the possibility of a move to City, the player said, “Do I want to go to Manchester City? I wish. It might be possible.” That comment is seen as a green light for City to make a move.
It remains to be seen which of these deals actually goes through, with Pellegrini about to take up his role as manager at Manchester City.
