Manchester United were 'this much' close to win the Premier League title before Sergio Aguero's late winner in the dying moments of the season helped Manchester City clinch the Premier League title. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his men would like to put the trophy less season behind them and start their new campaign to get the title back to Old Trafford.

Ferguson has already made an impact in the current transfer window by signing Japanese International Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund, Nick Powel from Crewe, Chilean International Angelo Henriquez and the major signing of the current Transfer window for United, Robin Van Persie from Arsenal.

Defence:

With David De Gea improving in the second half of last season and Anders Lindegaard giving tough competition to the Spaniard, it would be a tough task for Ferguson. De Gea would be selected for Premier League and Champions League where as Lindegaard would be given a chance to start in FA Cup and Carling Cup.

With a return of skipper Nemanja Vidic, that would give more stability in United's defence. Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling would be taking more of Central Defensive role. Phil Jones and Rafael da Silva will play more in the right back position. Evans had a very good last season and if Smalling and Jones remains fit, it could be an added advantage for Ferguson.

Left back could cause a matter to worry for Ferguson. Rafael's twin brother Fabio has been loaned out to QPR for a season. Patrice Evra is the only reliable option he has at the moment unless United recruit a left back in the current transfer window. Evra was not consistent last season and the return of United's skipper could ease of some pressure for Evra. Antonio Valencia and Carick could also take the defensive role if required.

Midfield:

United have good strength on the wing with services of Antonio Valencia, Luis Nani and Ashley Young. The wingers would be the driving force for United this season. Everyone knows United need a Central midfield player. United need a player who can be an engine to the team and control the game like the way Yaya Toure does for Manchester City. United do have services of Paul Scholes but Scholes playing week in week out for the entire season at this age could not be realistic.

Ferguson has Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Anderson, Kagawa, and Ryan Giggs at the Central midfield. Kagawa could add more strength to United's midfield and the Japanese International could have a major impact this season. United did not buy Kagawa to sell t-shirts in the East. Kagawa could provide plenty of ammunition to the strikers. Kagawa is an attacking midfielder who creates and scores goals. The Japanese International also works hard for the team and is a very intelligent footballer.

Carrick has always been under rated player for United. Carrick was one of the best player for United last season. If Cleverley remains fit for the entire season, it would be a big advantage for United. It could be the decisive season for Anderson as the Brazilian has not yet made an impact after arriving at Old Trafford. Giggs could come of the bench and play a vital role in the dying minutes of the match as United are known for scoring late goals.

Attack:

With the signing of Van Persie, Rooney and the Dutch striker could go on to become the best attack in England. Ferguson has more option up front with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. The arrival of Van Persie has made it worse for Dimitar Berbatov who could be on his way out during the summer transfer window. This will not be a matter to worry for Ferguson or United fans. Berbatov's departure from the club could bring in some revenue for United. With the arrival of Van Persie, it could ease some amount of pressure for Rooney. United have the best attack and can give tough time to the opponents defence.

Verdict:

Ferguson and his men will be going for the Title and it will not be an easy task. Ferguson is clearly aware of the same and the Scot knows it is no longer a two horse race. Chelsea and Manchester City will give tough competition for Ferguson and his men. With the arrival of Van Persie, it could be the difference between first and second and the return of their skipper who missed the remainder of last season after injuring his knee in December, could only adds strength to the squad.
