Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to move for Tottenham's wantaway midfielder Luka Modric once again after missing out on Brazilian Lucas Moura to PSG.

Luka Modric has been the subject of a year long transfer saga involving the player handing in a transfer request last summer, but was forced to stay by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy when Chelsea came knocking.

Once again Chelsea attempted to pursue the Croatian international during this transfer window but the Blues were again met by a stubborn Daniel Levy, who refused to lower his £40 million asking price for the 26-year-old midfielder.

United have also made various enquiries without making any real moves for Modric, as they were moving for Lucas Moura. With that deal collapsing, Sir Alex is looking to make a move back in for Luka Modric as he attempts to get cover for the retiring Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, who will both play one final season.

Tottenham though have been keen to keep hold of Modric and have kept his asking price at £40 million throughout, the player has even returned to training this week. Ferguson will not pay £40 million but is prepared to stretch to £30 million to land his man.

Real Madrid were also targeting Modric but were also put off by the asking price. Modric is a technically gifted creative midfielder who is very intelligent with the ball, possessing all the attributes that Ferguson is looking for.

United will now weigh up their options and attempt to negotiate a deal with Tottenham that will see Modric joining the Red devils before the window closes at the end of this month.
