Manchester United have been frantically searching for a new midfielder to add to the ranks before the end of the transfer window and have been looking at a number of options.

With Lucas Moura joining Paris Saint-Germain and Luka Modric seemingly being priced out of a move to Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to step up his interest in Portuguese international midfielder, Porto's Joao Moutinho who has declared that he cannot guarantee staying at Porto.

United want to strengthen the midfield and add technically good players to replace veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholces. Moutinho is a player that fits the bill and has been watched by United since the beginning of summer.

The 25-year-old has also been on the radar of Chelsea last summer and ironically has been chased by Andre Villas-Boas at Tottenham this summer.

It is expected that Porto will demand around £30 million for Moutinho but United will only be looking to offer £20 million to begin with. The Red Devils will make an enquiry regarding the players fee and availability this week.

Moutinho is a Portuguese international midfielder that offers a good all round ability and plays as a box to box type midfielder. He has played 48 times for Portugal and recently had an impressive Euro competition this summer.

At club level he has been at Porto since 2010 and before that he had a good stint at Sporting from 2004 scoring 32 goals for the club.

Ferguson must now decide whether to pursue his interest as he searches for the missing link in midfield.
