Sir Alex Ferguson has very fixed transfer targets every year. He rarely buys a player because one of his scouts has a hunch. Apart from Bebe of cause. Lucas Moura and Robin van Persie are both immensely talented forwards but United can surely only purchase one of them.
But which one would be better suited for Manchester United and which one is better of moving elsewhere?
Robin van Persie was the Barclays Premier League top scorer last season. He was the sole reason why Arsenal could maintain and finish in the top four. He has everything you'd expect in a striker and Arsenal will certainly miss him if he leaves the Emirates.
Although Manchester United are in the race to sign the Dutchman, they face competition from Manchester City and Juventus. RvP has made it known that he wants to join a club with history. Which rules out Manchester City as their history has come in the last year. Juventus and United are two of the biggest clubs in the World and their history is unparalleled in their respected countries.
Robin van Persie would fit into United perfectly. He could play as the lone striker with Wayne Rooney behind him, sitting in the hole. This would almost guarantee the departure of Dimitar Berbatov but this is expected anyway. I suppose Javier Hernandez would take up the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer role on the bench and Danny Welbeck would be RvP's replacement if he was to miss a game.
The logistics of United's striker force would be a hinder to the signing of van Persie but every title winning team needs four good strikers. Just look at Manchester City last season. Because the Dutchman has experience of the EPL, it gives him the immediate edge over Lucas Moura's signing.
Lucas Moura is an exceptional Brazilian talent. Although unknown to many before the rumours began to snowball, he has always been a target for Sir Alex. As a viewer of the Brazilian Serie A, I have watched Lucas Moura in his domestic league. I believe you can only judge a player's quality on their domestic performances. He is everything the media say he is. Very skilful and very intelligent, he is an extraordinary talent.
I think people are confused about Moura's best position. He is quite a versatile player and can play at a high standard all over the pitch. He likes to play in the hole but also does an exceptional job on the wings or up front. With so much skill, it's no surprise that he can play anywhere.
Sir Alex wants to find his new star. The player to emulate Ronaldo and the likes. Lucas Moura is that player but with the signing of Kagawa, who also likes to play in the hole, this signing may not materialise.
For me Robin van Persie would be the safer option because of his experience in the league. However Lucas is the more exciting option. In modern football we have to take risks and Lucas is quite a big risk. But that's what Ferguson is paid for. Taking risks is his game and if he likes a player, he won't sleep until he gets his man.
