Manchester United has signed Nick Powell to a four-year, £6m deal for Crewe Alexandra. The 18-year old, attacking midfielder was the star who scored in Crewe's League Two playoff final victories against Cheltenham last month. Powell had an important role in Crewe's success last season. United had tough competition from Premier League teams Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea to sign the England Under-18 international. Powell had been with Crewe since he was five years old and scored 16 goals in 45 matches last season for Crewe.

Powell is United's second signing of the summer after United completed £17m deal for Shiniji Kagawa. Powell completed his medical today at United's Carrington training ground.

United's latest signing Powell admits to being excited by the move to Old Trafford.

"It really is a dream come true to be signing for Manchester United. I have had a great time at Crewe and I would like to thank them for helping me to develop as a player over the past 13 years" Powell said.

"I'm excited about continuing my development with Sir Alex and the world class players in the squad. The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next season is an exciting prospect. I can't wait to get started." Powell added.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was the first one to comment on his latest signing.

"We have scouted Nick for months now," Ferguson said. "He is an exceptional talent and has been schooled well at Crewe."

"I'm delighted he has chosen to come to United. He has a lot to offer and we are all looking forward to working with him." added Ferguson.

Powell would be traveling with United to South Africa and China for a preseason tour. Powell was also linked with a move back to Crewe on a loan deal, however they have confirmed that Powell would not be returning to his old team. Powell could be loaned out to a championship side after the preseason tour.
