According to The Metro, Manchester United officials have been alerted by Ashley Cole's contract talks breaking down with his current employers Chelsea, and are ready to move in to tempt the England international to Old Trafford this summer.
According to the British media on Monday morning, the left back has rejected the new contract offer from Chelsea, which was reportedly only a one-year extension. Chelsea have a policy in place that means they only offer any player who is over the age of 30 a one-year extension on their current deal, and it normally means a drop in wages as well.
A number of Europe's big clubs have been keeping tabs on the contract situation that has been going on for over a month now. Cole will be available on a free transfer this summer when his contract runs out.
Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester United are among the clubs interested in the 31-year-old, who is rated as one of the best left backs in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson has always been an admirer of Cole and has been searching for left back options.
Cole signed for Chelsea from London rivals Arsenal in 2006 and has never been short of controversy. Most recently he was under fire for aiming an offensive Tweet towards the English Football Association, thus causing another storm for the defender.
Chelsea are set to lose out on the £5 million plus William Gallas fee they paid for Cole if they fail to reach an agreement and could then be facing the prospect of the player lining up against them for one of their firm rivals.842331
