Although Manchester United are currently enjoying one of their most prolific seasons under Sir Alex Ferguson, the team is still miles behind the likes of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Hence, in order to be in the same category as the above-mentioned European giants, the Red Devils would need to make some pivotal summer signing at the end of the 2012/13 season.
Thus, here are three players that the red side of Manchester might target.
1. Asmir Begovic, Stoke City
Although youngster David De Gea is showing promising signs for the future and is improving with every passing week, it has been reported that Manchester United are not truly convinced with the potential of the Spaniard and are ready to replace the latter with Stoke City custodian Asmir Begovic.
Via Daily Mail:
"Manchester United are to revisit their interest in Stoke’s Asmir Begovic in the summer.
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident of securing an £8 million deal for the goalkeeper which would put David De Gea’s Old Trafford future in severe doubt."
Even though Begovic himself is unclear about his Stoke future and De Gea is being constantly linked back with a move to Spain, it is unlikely that United would part ways with their present 'keeper, particularly considering his development over the past several months and the massive transfer money that was paid for the 22-year-old's services.
2. Victor Wanyama, Celtic
Considered as one of the most promising young African footballers in the world right now, Victor Wanyama is a player who would add the much-needed defensive protection to the Manchester United midfield.
Blessed with robust tackling and excellent passing skills, Wantama is the ideal player to sit in the middle of the park for the Red Devils and dictate the games with sheer excellence and drive.
Fergie personally scouted Wanyama last month and with a transfer value ranging less than £20 million, one can surely expect United to make a swoop for the Kenya international in the summer.
3. Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund
Despite the fact that they have one of the most in-depth and productive attacks in entire Europe, Manchester United are reportedly keen to further strengthen their strike-force with the addition of Poland international Robert Robert Lewandowski.
Regarded as one of the best poachers of the game, Lewandowski has already declined a contract extension with Dortmund and it is believed that United are one of the front-runners for the signature of the 24-year-old.
As exciting as it would be to have Lewandowski play alongside the likes of Rooney and Robin van Persie, his arrival will likely end the Manchester United career of either Danny Welbeck or Javier Hernandez and therefore, Ferguson and co. could be wasting their valuable transfer funds by buying the former Lech Poznań youngster.
