At Stamford bridge today, United had only one aim and that was to beat the league leaders Chelsea to close down the gap to 1 point and to save themselves finding 7 points behind Chelsea. And boy did they do it in style, it was an enthralling evening where Sir Alex Ferguson’s men triumphed over Di Matteo’s blue army in a match full of controversy and excitement. And it was the first time in last 10 years that United beat Chelsea at their home thus making this match a memorable one.
The match started with an early goal by a Robin Van Persie shot which hit the post and deflected back into the goal after getting a touch from David Luiz back into his own net. Van Persie made it even sweeter for the reds in the 12th minute when he shot the ball past Peter Cech into the Chelsea net after a beautiful assist from Antonio Valencia from the right flank.
United carried the momentum further but the blues started to dominate the possession in the later part of the first half putting some decent attempts on the United goal but the heroics of David De Gea were too tough for them to get away with. But it was not for long, Rooney gave away a silly free kick in the 44th minute just outside the United box and Juan Mata made no mistake in putting the ball past De Gea at the back of the net.
Chelsea was extremely attacking from the start of the second half itself and got their equalizer in the 53rd minute by a Ramirez header after some poor defending from the United defenders. The 2-2 scoreline took the match to a new dimension and the game became extraordinarily fast with both sides pushing for a win.
Branislav Ivanovic was shown a straight red card and sent off in the 62nd minute after he tripped Ashley Young of a goal scoring opportunity. Again in the 69th minute, it was Fernando Torres who was sent off after getting a second yellow card for diving and this decision of Mark Gluttenberg is bound to create some controversies tomorrow in the papers. Chelsea were reduced to 9 men against United’s 11 and in the 75th minute, United’s little master Javier Hernandez came up with some Mexican magic and scored the winning goal by a Rafael assist after an excellent save by Peter Cech from a powerful Van Persie shot and sealed the victory for the reds. Hernandez was offside which was not spotted by the linesman and this will again raise the questions on the referees decisions in the match as their impact will be huge in the title race.
All in all, it was a happy night for the Manchester fans but not so for the Chelsea blues who lost a good chance of going 7 points up against United and are now left just 1 point ahead. It makes the title race more interesting now and it will be even more fun to watch.
