The UFC on FOX 5 weigh-ins had a plenty of drama in Seattle last night, with contender Nathan Diaz missing weight twice before eventually hitting the 155 pound mark before his much anticipated fight with champion Benson Henderson.
The Californian came in .6 pounds overweight initially, and seemed unaware of the rules denying the usual one pound grace for title bouts. Scenes of Diaz arguing with UFC President Dana White on stage were rather comical, and you’d have imagined that a professional fighter in the biggest match of his life would have a touch more attention to detail.
In truth both fighter looked really drawn out at the weigh-ins, with Henderson looking rake like, and one can’t see him making the 155 pound mark that much longer.
In the other fights, Shogun Rua appeared a tad flabby around the mid-rift, while Alexander Gustafsson was on point tipping the scales at a lean and mean 205.4 pounds.
Meanwhile, BJ Penn looked in great shape coming into his bout with young gun Rory Macdonald. At the press conference Penn looked considerably smaller, thou at the weigh-ins with his shirt off it looks like a fairer fight. Indeed that is the gift of elite fighters who are under 6-foot, and able to make themselves look bigger without a shirt on. GSP is another prime example of somebody who looks way smaller in his usual suit and tie, compared to his fighting trunks.
