The Alabama Crimson Tide's season is turning into a parody of Herman's Hermits, Henry the VIII. With the prevailing line, "Second verse, same as the first".
Seems like every week, Alabama is a double digit favorite. And every week, Alabama faces a new challenge. Last week it was Tyler Bray and Tennessee's potent passing attack. Mission accomplished. The week before that, it was Missouri and their up-tempo, no huddle, spread offense. The only thing that slowed the Tide in Columbus was the only thing that was out of their control, the weather. Mission accomplished. Before that, an up and coming, rejuvenated Ole Miss. Check. A feisty Florida Atlantic? 40-7. A motivated Arkansas team? Goose Egg...literally. Western Kentucky, Michigan? Check, Check.
So you get the picture. Every week, we try to come up with compelling story lines to garner your interest in whomever the Tide happen to be playing.
Like this week.
Mississippi State rolls into Tuscaloosa with a perfect 7-0 record for the first time since 1999. The Bulldogs are ranked #13 and are riding the dynamic play of up and coming QB, Tyler Russell. They have a stingy defense and an efficient offense. And they do not turn the ball over.
But...you knew "but" was coming. But, this is Alabama. This is not Auburn or Tennessee or Kentucky or Troy or Middle Tennessee or Jackson State or South Alabama--a collection of less than impressive opponents for Mississippi State this season. This is Alabama. This is the No 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. And Alabama has more wins than Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky have COMBINED. (Unless you are an avid college football fan, you've probably never even heard of the other teams)
So here's where I get you excited for the game and tell you it will be closer than the experts think. Wait, the experts have Alabama has 13.5 point favorites. So it probably won't be closer than the experts think. Alabama pulls away at the end because they will wear the Bulldogs down with a relentless and stubborn running game to compliment the steady play of AJ McCarron.
Have we heard this before?
"The second verse, same as the first."
The Tide get their VIII win of the season, in royal fashion.
