Right when it looked liked the Sox were going to get their entire team healthy, another injury has struck their fragile lineup. Willie Middlebrooks got hit in his right wrist by a 95 mile an hour fastball thrown by Esmil Rogers in the ninth inning, suffering a broken wrist. At this point it is still unsure how long he will miss, but missing the season is the likely scenario. It seems like the Sox may not ever get healthy enough to put there projected starting lineup on the field.
Middlebrooks was the who was good enough to allow the Red Sox to give away Kevin Youkilis. This move may come back to haunt them now that Youkilis' went down to the injury bug making him the 25th player to go on the disabled list this year. The Red Sox have had a Major League leading amount of games missed due to injury as of when Middlebrooks went down. If the Sox can actually grind out a playoff run it would be nothing short of miraculous with the luck they have had with the disabled list.
It isn't clear who Bobby Valentine will write in at third base on a daily basis but today he has Pedro Ciriaco scheduled to play third. The Sox called up Danny Valencia who they received in a trade from the Minnesota Twins. Nick Punto finished the game at third last night so Valentine has an option of any of these three players, and it may be third base by committee. Middlebrooks is a rising start= and if he is able to return before the playoffs he will be a huge impact player.
