Serie A Transfer News: Juventus Close In On Former Chelsea Striker Didier Drogba

On Monday, Juventus's club president Beppe Marotta has confirmed that he has made an enquiry as to the availability of Shanghai Shenhua striker, Didier Drogba.

Marotta told calciomercatto.com that they are always making enquiries and they have made one about Drogba. The Ivory Coast International has been considering his future at the Chinese club after complications surrounding the clubs ownership and his contract.

The former Chelsea hero has re-iterated his refusal to play for another club in the Premier League out of respect for his former employers, so a move to Serie A seems very likely. Drogba had been training with Chelsea recently ahead of the African Nations Cup competition that begins at the end of January.

Juventus want to add firepower up top and see Drogba as the ideal physical body to bring in a real presence to their attacking options. With current striker Nicklas Bendtner sidelined with injury problems, Drogba is a ready made replacement.

There is confusion surrounding the 34-year-old's availability after someone who appeared to pose as the players agent, confirmed that his player would be available due to having a contract termination agreement with the Chinese club. This was since dismissed by the the player's actual representatives who confirmed via their Twitter account that this agent was in fact a fake agent.

Due to this it is unclear whether Drogba will be making a move away from China, but there has certainly been contact made by the Italian club and it seems an offer is imminent.

Drogba was a cult hero at Chelsea, scoring the winning penalty to help them lift the Champions League Trophy, which ended up being his last kick for the club. Admired amongst the Chelsea faithful during his time at Stamford Bridge, many supporters would take the player back in an instant.

He managed to score 157 goals for Chelsea in just 341 matches, leading him to be named as Chelsea's greatest ever player in a recent poll conducted by the Official Chelsea Magazine. The main stage could yet be about to welcome the powerhouse centre forward once again in the shape of the Serie A and Juventus.
