Sir Alex Ferguson was marking his 1000 game as a manager in charge for Manchester United when his team played against Southampton. Ferguson couldn't have asked anything better than this. United were lucky enough to secure three points after coming down twice from goal down to secure a victory and courtesy to Robin Van Persie's first hat-trick for United.

United were a goal down in the first quarter of the game as Rickie Lambert opened the scoring for Southampton. Lambert's opener was cancelled by Van Persie's goal in the 23 minute of the match.

The Home team pressed hard in the second half and finally their efforts paid off in the 65 minute as Morgan Schneiderlin gave the lead to Southampton. Van Persie had earlier missed a penalty as the game appeared to be slipping away from the Red Devils at 2-1 down with just minutes remaining.

Ferguson then played his cards by introducing his old servant Paul Scholes, Nani and Javier Hernandez during last period of the game. Scholes's introduction did turn the game late on.

Scholes and Nani were vital in the last quarter of the game as Van Persie scored two goals in a matter of less than ten minutes.  Ferguson felt the introduction of his substitutes did change the course of the game.

"For that period we were well out of it until Paul Scholes came on the park. His vision and consistency of passing gave us complete control of the game"

"Then it was just a matter of getting the goals of course and Van Persie has come up with them. He's got four goals in two starts and he'll get better. I think Chicharito made a difference too. He started stretching them and making fantastic runs off the ball. I was delighted with his performance." Ferguson said.

Speaking about Van Persie's performance Ferguson said "Van Persie scored a fantastic equalizer for us and second half you think let's just get down to business and get this done,"

"But credit to Southampton they kept loading the ball into the box. Everything we did in preparation for the game has all been to deal with back-post crosses and they scored two goals off them so that was disappointing. But credit to Southampton they are good at it" Ferguson told Sky Sports

United were not up to the mark back in defense with Anders Lindegaard starting the game instead of David De Gea.  Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic started for the first time this season. Ferguson is not worried about his back four as he feels they would eventually settle down.

"When you play two centre-backs together regularly you get results. It's always been the case with Bruce and Pallister, Stam and Johnsen and last season with Evans and Ferdinand playing regularly"

"This season we've had four centre-backs injured for the first game. Carrick has played centre-back at Everton"" and we've had Valencia"" at right-back. With the best will in the world you know that's never going to be a perfect solution. If we get the centre-backs back that'll give us a really good chance." Ferguson went on to add
