Gold rallied to a record high of $1,677.90 on Thursday on nagging concerns a global economic soft patch will worsen and following comments by European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.
It also forged new records in euros , yen and sterling .

Spot gold traded at $1,676.06 an ounce at 1248 GMT, up from $1,660.70 late in New York on Wednesday.
