Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral Giles Fraser has resigned from his post, church authorities said on Thursday, as a protest camp continued to occupy the square in front of the cathedral despite requests to leave.

We are obviously disappointed that he is not able to continue to his work with Chapter during these challenging days, the cathedral said in a statement.

The cathedral had said it intended to reopen on Friday, after health and safety concerns that it said the camp posed forced it to close for the first time since the World War Two.

Fraser played a key role in the fraught relations between the protesters and the iconic London cathedral, intervening to stop police sweeping the protesters from the cathedral steps early on in the occupation.
