'Star Trek Into Darkness'
"Star Trek Into Darkness" beat "Iron Man 3" at the box office this weekend, but its numbers may be considered a disappointment. Wiki

The first official trailer for “Star Trek Into Darkness” isn’t out yet, but fans who just can’t wait anymore can watch the abridged trailer, released Thursday morning. Film studio Paramount released this “trailer announcement” to get fans excited for the upcoming release of the actual trailer.

The focal point of the trailer, as well as the recently released “Star Trek Into Darkness” movie poster, is Benedict Cumberbatch, whose character hasn’t been specified yet. As of now, he is rumored to be playing the role of Khan, but IMDB has that cited as a rumor, with some fans feeling he may be portraying Gary Mitchell.

Whichever character director J.J. Abrams has Cumberbatch cast in; he will be the film’s antagonist, and a ruthless one.

"You think your world is safe? It is an illusion," Cumberbatch villainously whispers in the announcement trailer, as viewers watch chaos ensue. "A comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance."

Unlike most trailers, this announcement gives a release date for the official trailer for the movie, rather than the film itself. The “Star Trek Into Darkness” theatrical trailer will debut on Dec. 17. The “Star Trek Into Darkness” release date isn’t for five months after the trailer comes out, opening at the box office on May 17, 2013.

Diehard trekkers can get a bit more out of the announcement trailer by watching the Japanese version, which includes an extra scene, rife with emotion.

"Is there anything you wouldn't do for your family?" asks Cumberbatch at the end of the Japanese version of the announcement trailer. As the question is heard, viewers see Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) touch hands together through glass, which bears a resemblance to the scene where Spok dies in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” notes HuffPost.

The description of the announcement trailer includes an official plot summary of the J.J. Abrams sci-fi epic.

“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes "Star Trek Into Darkness."

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Aside from Benedict Cumberbatch’s role as an unknown villain, Chris Pine as the heroic Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as the ulta-logical Spock, the film’s cast also includes Alice Eve in an unknown role, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu.
