A "Star Wars" television show may soon be coming to the small screen, according to ABC's president.

A live-action television series based on the universe of the '"Star Wars" films is in early development at the network. The news was confirmed by ABC President Paul Lee, reports Reuters.

"We've started conversations with them," said Lee during a TV critics meeting in Beverly Hills, Calif., Sunday. "I have an inkling in my mind, but they have a lot on their plate."

"Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum previously provided a few details about a TV spinoff based on the movies, titled "Star Wars: Underworld."

"It's underneath what's going on. … It's the criminals and the gangs," he explained. "Expect a lot of smugglers, gangsters, bounty hunters, and a few Wall Street-type power brokers," he told Entertainment Weekly in a 2012 interview. "Nothing about Luke or the Skywalker saga."

In an interview with IGN that same year, he said the show was on hold due to budget concerns caused by the many costly visual effects outlined in the series' scripts.

"They take place between Episode III and Episode IV," he confirmed. "That 20-year period when Luke is growing up. It's not about Luke, but it's about that period when the Empire is trying to take things over."

Earlier in June 2011, McCollum stated that the series would hit TV screens within the next three to four years.

The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion last year. Following that announcement, it was confirmed that "Star Wars Episode 7" was being scheduled for a 2015 release.
