Now that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has shoved the popular science fantasy franchise back into the mainstream, all eyes are on the next installment, “Rogue One.” Although not much is known about the spinoff/prequel feature, one of its key actors just let some information slip that could have huge implications for “The Force Awakens.”

One of the most captivating parts of the recently released teaser for “Rogue One” is the rebellious lead character Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Speaking to Sky News, former “Hannibal” actor Mads Mikkelsen revealed a bit more about his role in the movie as it relates to Erso. The actor, whose part in the film has yet to be revealed in any official capacity, let it slip that his character is the father of Jones’ character. Sadly, the video, below, shows him quickly lament volunteering that information to the news outlet and promptly zipping his lips about all things “Star Wars.” Despite not getting any more real insight into the plot of the film or Mikkelsen’s character, the implications of his minor reveal are possibly massive.

As anyone who has seen “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” knows, one of the overarching mysteries that was never solved was the parentage of the character Rey (Daisy Ridley). The fact that the question was posed in the movie without any conclusion has prompted many to assume that her parents will be a character significant to the larger world of “Star Wars.” After the trailer for “Rogue One” dropped, CinemaBlend reported that fans quickly compiled some pretty convincing evidence that Erso could be Rey’s mother. Given the fact that “Rogue One” takes place before the very first “Star Wars” movie, “A New Hope,” the timeline works out. If this is true, not only will “Rogue One” paint a better picture of Rey, her parents and their struggle, but it will give fans a look at the new lead’s grandfather as well.

Although the building blocks are in place for a cross-picture reveal of Rey’s origins, Ridley isn’t yet convinced. As previously reported, the actress was asked by MTV about the current rumor that she’s actually a member of the Erso family, to which she jokingly replied that she wasn’t moved by the evidence.

“I’m not being funny, you guys, but just because she’s white and got brown hair … it doesn’t mean she’s my mom.”
