Suddenly, Michigan basketball star Nik Stauskas’ impressive shooting touch from beyond the arch makes a lot of sense.

In August 2011, Stauskas, then a prep school star at South Kent School in Connecticut, posted a YouTube video in which he makes an incredible 128 3-pointers in just over 6 minutes, including 102 in a five-minute span.

After missing his junior basketball season at South Kent due to a hip injury, Stauskas hit the backyard to hone his shooting skills. At the start of the video, he states his attention to break his personal of 96 3-pointers in five minutes. Minutes later, he had accomplished the feat easily, making around 90 percent of his 3-pointer attempts.

The backyard basketball court that served as the site for Stauskas’ viral video was nearly never built. According to a recent New York Times feature, Stauskas had to beg his father, Paul, to install the court instead of a swimming pool or putting green. Clearly, the decision has paid off.

According to Yahoo Sports, Paul Stauskas appears in a number of his son’s basketball videos, normally serving as his personal rebounder. The videos, which are posted to the “StauskasBasketball” YouTube channel, include a separate shooting display in which the younger Stauskas drained 45 of 50 3-pointers over this past Christmas break.

Michigan Wolverines fans have gotten used to Stauskas’ deadly perimeter jumper. During the 2012-2013 college basketball season, the freshman guard hit 44.9 percent of his 3-point shots, a number that would currently place him in the top five among NBA players.

Stauskas’ sharpshooting antics culminated in Michigan’s blowout Elite Eight victory over the Florida Gators, in which he hit all six of his attempts from beyond the arc en route to a 79-59 win.

The Wolverines will be counting on Stauskas’ shooting abilities when they take on the Syracuse Orange in this Saturday’s Final Four matchup. The Orange are coming off a dominant defensive performance in which they held Marquette to just 39 points.
