Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's purchase of the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion becomes the second-most expensive sports team sale in North America.

That’s a huge number, especially considering Forbes valued the team at only $575 million in January.

To put it in perspective, this is the most expensive sale of an NBA team, and almost four times the last NBA sale when hedgefund managers Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry bought the Milwaukee Bucks for $550 million.

Here is a list of the five most expensive sports team sales in North America:

1. L.A. Dodgers

Owner: Malcom Glazer purchased the team in 2005. Glazer died Wednesday at the age of 85, and the team's value is now at least $2.23 billion.
