Stocks rose to session highs on Tuesday as investors scooped up shares of big manufacturers, energy companies and major banks, including JPMorgan Chase .

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 73.76 points, or 0.72 percent, at 10,259.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 8.77 points, or 0.81 percent, at 1,097.96. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 10.23 points, or 0.47 percent, at 2,181.43.

* Initially indexes traded near breakeven, but then headed higher as traders scoured the market for stocks beaten down in the recent selloff. JPMorgan, up 2.5 percent at $40.60, was the Dow's top boost.
