U.S. stocks extended losses on Tuesday, with indexes tumbling more than 2 percent as fears grew that the financial rescue package for Greece may not be enough to prevent a sovereign debt crisis from spreading.

Energy shares also fell along with the price of oil.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 226.12 points, or 2.03 percent, to 10,925.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> lost 25.98 points, or 2.16 percent, to 1,176.28. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> shed 70.31 points, or 2.81 percent, to 2,428.43.
