After failing to sustain an initial upward move, stocks have shown some uncertainty over the course of morning trading on Thursday. The choppy trading extends the trend that was seen in the previous session before a late day rally.

Despite the choppy trading, significant weakness has emerged among gold stocks, with a notable decrease by the price of gold contributing to the weakness in the sector. Real estate, health insurance, and airline stocks are also under pressure.

On the other hand, computer hardware stocks are posting strong gains in late morning trading, with Palm (PALM) helping to lead the sector higher. Considerable strength is also visible among networking, railroad, and wireless stocks.

The major averages are currently turning in a mixed performance, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq holding onto a moderate gain. While the Nasdaq is currently up 9.18 at 1,635.98, the Dow is down 25.17 at 8,004.45 and the S&P 500 is down 1.16 at 850.90.
