Stocks showed a strong upward move at the start of trading on Monday, with the major averages seeing some further upside after moving higher over the course of the previous week. Nonetheless, buying interest has remained somewhat subdued.

A variety of sectors have shown notable upward moves in early trading, reflecting broad based strength. Gold, airline, banking, and steel stocks are turning in some of the best performances, while healthcare provider stocks are bucking the uptrend.

In the past few minutes, the major averages have edged down off their highs for the young session, although they remain firmly positive. The Dow is currently up 61.80 at 8,274.21, the Nasdaq is up 12.40 at 1,731.60 and the S&P 500 is up 7.44 at 884.96.
