As was the case in the previous session, stocks have shown a lack of direction over the course of morning trading on Tuesday. After seeing initial weakness, the major averages have had difficulty sustaining any significant moves.

The choppy trading comes as traders express some uncertainty about the economic impact of the recent swine flu outbreak. Speculation about the results of the government's financial stress tests is also contributing to the volatility.

A mixed performance by the major sectors is also contributing to the lack of direction being shown by the broader markets.

While health insurance, healthcare provider, and biotechnology stocks are adding to the gains that they posted in the previous session, significant weakness is visible among metal, oil service, banking, and housing stocks.

The major averages are currently turning in a mixed performance, with the Nasdaq holding onto a modest gain. While the Nasdaq is currently up 4.28 at 1,683.69, the Dow is down 2.63 at 8,022.37 and the S&P 500 is down 0.30 at 857.21.
