Veterans Day is an official federal holiday, so plenty of places are closed Tuesday, Nov. 11. But shoppers need not worry as some retailers are going to be open this Veterans Day.

Veterans Day, earlier referred to as "Armistice Day" because it was celebrated on the same date that World War I hostilities ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day.

Veterans Day honors all veterans, living and deceased. It is often confused with Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Monday of May, and marks a day to pay tribute solely to those who died in service or as a result of an injury sustained during battle.

Government offices, postal services, schools, and libraries are closed on Veterans Day. But most stores, restaurants, shopping centers, and malls are open.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, "non-government businesses are free to make their own decisions to close or remain open for business, regardless of federal, state or local government closings."

People looking to run last minute errands need not worry as most retail stores, malls, restaurants, liquor stores and grocery stores are open on Nov. 11, though its best to check with individual locations to make sure. Many restaurants will also be honoring veterans with freebies. Pharmacies and drug stores are also open.
