Gus on 'The Strain'
Gus (Miguel Gomez) goes to Rikers Island prison to find recruits to join his fight against the Master in "The Strain" episode 12. Michael Gibson/FX

A major battle in the war against the Master is about to go down as FX's "The Strain" Season 2 is close to its conclusion. In episode 12, "Fallen Light," the final play for the Occido Lumen was set up, while Eph (Corey Stoll) reflects on the mistakes he hass made with Nora (Mia Maestro) and has to make a difficult decision with Zach (Max Charles).

Setrakian (David Bradley) and Fet (Kevin Durand) go to see Alonso Creem (Jamie Hector), who now has possession of the sacred Occido Lumen. Setrakian tries to give Creem the watch he promised him as part of their deal, but Creem says no deal because there's another bidder on the Lumen, Eldritch Palmer (Jonathan Hyde). Setrakian is livid, but says he'll be able to outbid Palmer. He agrees to go back to see Creem the next day with gold and will try to defeat Palmer in a live auction.

Needing the backing of the ancients, Setrakian goes to see Mr. Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones) and informs him about the situation with the Lumen. Quinlan says the ancients might be hesitant because Setrakian could use the book on them, but Setrakian says they have to decide if he’s more of a risk than the Master. Quinlan says getting their support won’t be a problem, they just have to trust one another.

On the evil side, Eichorst (Richard Sammel) informs Palmer that the Master doesn't trust him with the Lumen, so he will go to the auction instead of Palmer. Palmer tries to fight him on it, but Eichorst reminds him the only reason he and Coco (Lizzie Brocheré) are alive is because of the Master. The Master gave them “the white,” but its effects aren’t permanent, and if Palmer doesn’t get more soon, Eichorst says Palmer will wither and die. Palmer agrees, but knows he’s being played and clearly has some sort of plan.

Nora discovers Zach's grandparents; Kelly's (Natalie Brown) are still alive and he may now have a safe place to go. Eph has to decide whether to go there with Zach or stay and find a way to get his bio-weapon out. He makes the decision that he should take Zach there, even though he's been fighting his whole life to try and spend time with his son. Eph and Nora go see Councilwoman Justine Feraldo (Samantha Mathis) to pitch their weapon and to also get traveler's permits to get Zach to safety.

Eph and Nora
Eph (Corey Stoll, left) tries to salvage his relationship with Nora (Mia Maestro, right) in "The Strain" episode 12. Michael Gibson/FX

Eph and Nora's backstory was told through flashbacks in episode 12, which featured their late friend Jim (Sean Astin). The two fell for each other at a CDC conference in 2005, where Eph asked Nora to come work for him. Eph has since messed that relationship up to the point where there's no fixing it, especially after Eph's latest romantic rendezvous in Washington, D.C. Eph thanks Nora for everything at the end of the episode and says he never stopped loving her. She walks away from Eph and goes to her room, where she cries.

Gus (Miguel Gomez) and Angel (Joaquín Cosio) head to Rikers Island prison in a school bus to find new recruits to join their fight against the Master. Gus served 18 months in the prison and has friends on the inside, but he hopes they all haven't been turned into strigoi. Inside the prison, Gus is able to access his old wing, which is fortunately the only one where inmates haven't been turned. He's able to convince his old friends to join him and fight alongside Mr. Quinlan.

On the way back to the bus, Gus decides to free a guard from a cell, even though the guard was notorious for abusing prisoners. Two inmates see this and they attack and kill the guard, which wakes up sleeping strigoi inside the jail. Gus, Angel and the prisoners fight their way through strigoi back to the bus. Before all of the inmates get on the bus, one inmate Perez (Ian Paola) says he's not taking orders from Gus, after Gus helped a guard. He goes to shoot Gus, when Angel blasts Perez away with a shotgun. The rest of the inmates decide maybe it's a good idea to follow Gus and they get on the bus.

At the end of the episode, Gus meets with Mr. Quinlan to inform him of his success with the recruits. Mr. Quinlan tells Gus that Setrakian is about to get the Lumen, but he trusts that Setrakian won’t give it up to him. He informs Gus it’s his job to either convince him to give it up or kill him and take it, leaving Gus with a tough choice.

Other Major Moments From Episode 12

  • Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) is still shaken after her run-in with Eichorst in episode 11. She's grateful that Fet saved her, but she tells him she loves Nikki (Nicola Correia-Damude) and wants to make something real for her. When Dutch goes back to Nikki's place she finds Nikki moving out. Nikki chooses to let Dutch go because Dutch wants to fight the strigoi and she doesn't.
  • Justine became the special director of security of New York City thanks to Palmer, who needs a friend in City Hall. She was also looked at as a suspect after Mayor Lyle (Ron Canada) was found dead, after he threatened to have her indicted for charging people on the Upper East Side for her task force. Who knows what will happen next for Justine, especially after she basically made a deal with the devil with Palmer.
