A strong magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck close to the Indonesian coast on Saturday at 10:17 a.m. local time (Friday at 8:17 p.m. EDT), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At a depth of 18.5 miles (29.8 kilometers), the quake's epicenter was 51 miles (83.0 kilometers) south-southeast of Manokwari, Papua, Indonesia.

No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported.

However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers (62 miles) of the earthquake epicenter, the center said.
